This course teaches the diagnosis and treatment of IBS or irritable bowel syndrome using Acupuncture. It is approved for 15 credits with both the NCCAOM Board. According to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, IBS affects between 25 and 45 million people in the United States (10 to 15% of the population).
Approximately 60 to 65% of IBS sufferers are female; 35 to 40% are male. IBS affects people of all ages, even children. Worldwide prevalence rates of IBS range from 9–23% and U.S. rates are generally in the area of 10–15%. As defined by NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases), IBS is a common disorder of the intestines that leads to cramping, pain, gassiness, bloating, and sudden changes in bowel habits. Approximately 20 to 40% of all visits to gastroenterologists are due to IBS symptoms.
This course discusses the various etiologies which precipitate it, the anatomy involved, food or emotional habits which precipitate it, and the exact acupuncture treatment protocol which will heal it. To offer acupuncture practitioners an in-depth look at irritable bowel syndrome, statistical data supporting the prevalence of this disease in our society and teach them how to treat the condition easily and gain good results using easy treatment protocols that consist of Acupuncture points.
The course includes discussions on the causes of IBS, the 4 types of IBS and the 4 groupings of IBS. The discussion also includes indications and symptoms of IBS. Also discussed are the role diet, stress, genetics and other factors that play a role in the occurrence of IBS. The course includes an in-depth look at patterns of treatment for IBS in TCM and how IBS affects the meridians and which acupuncture points are most suited to treating irritable bowel syndrome. The course ends with a discussion on the auricular acupuncture points that best work to treat IBS.
